Terms of Service

These are the terms for using Literashare, a neighborhood book-sharing service for New York City. They’re written in plain language on purpose. If anything here is unclear, write to team@literashare.com.

01

Who can use Literashare

Literashare is 18+ only. We ask for your date of birth when you sign up, and you confirm you’re 18 or older. If we later find that an account belongs to someone under 18, we suspend it and review it for removal, and we delete the associated personal data as described in our Privacy Policy.

Literashare currently only supports neighborhoods in New York City.

02

Your account

You sign in with Google — there’s no separate Literashare password to manage. Keep your account to yourself: one account per person, and you’re responsible for what happens under it.

We don’t yet have a self-serve way to delete your account. To close your account or ask us to delete your data, email team@literashare.com.

03

Books are gifts, not loans

When someone accepts a request for one of your books, that book is given away for good. Literashare doesn’t track loans, arrange returns, or mediate “I want it back.” Exchanges are final.

List a book only when you’re happy to see it go to a good home for good, and request a book only if you actually want to keep it.

04

Prohibited conduct

You agree not to use Literashare to:

  • Harass, threaten, or intimidate another member.
  • Post hate speech or discriminatory content.
  • Spam other members or run a commercial resale operation through the app.
  • List, request, or exchange illegal items or content.
  • File false or bad-faith reports to harass someone.
  • Impersonate another person, or create a new account to get around a suspension or ban.
05

Meeting up in person

Book handoffs happen in person, at your own risk. We do not run background checks on members or otherwise vet who you’re meeting.

Meet in a public place — a cafe, a library branch, a park — and tell someone where you’re going, or bring a friend. Literashare is not responsible for what happens during an in-person meetup. See our Community Guidelines for more meetup-safety guidance.

06

Enforcement

If you violate these terms or our Community Guidelines, we may take action — a warning, a temporary suspension, or a permanent ban — depending on severity and history, at our discretion. We may also remove content that violates these terms.

You can block any other member at any time, for any reason.

07

Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access for violating these terms. You can stop using Literashare at any time. As noted above, we don’t yet have self-serve account deletion — email team@literashare.com to close your account.

08

Disclaimers and limitation of liability

Literashare is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind. We don’t warrant the condition, accuracy, or description of any book listed, or the conduct of any member.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Literashare and its operators are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service or from in-person exchanges with other members.

09

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.

10

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as Literashare grows. If we do, we’ll update the effective date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Literashare after a change means you accept the updated terms.
